LUTSYK Alexander Dmytrovych (b. 05.02.1954, Lviv) – Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Head of Histology, Cytology and Embryology Department of DanyloHalytsky Lviv National Medical University (LNMU), laureate of the State Award of Ukraine in Science and Technology.
In 1977 graduated from the Medical Faculty of the Lviv Medical Institute (now Danylo Halytsky LNMU). Worked as an intern of the Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation of the Lviv Regional Clinical Hospital (1977–1978); as a Junior Research Employee in Lviv NSI of Tuberculosis (1978–1980); as an assistant lecturer (1980-1988), as an associate professor (1988–1989), as a Head (since 1989) of Histology, Cytology and Embryology Department,as a Vice-Rector of the International Relations of Danylo Halytsky LNMU (1997–2000), as a Vice-Rector on Scientific Work (2000–2014) of the DanyloHalytsky LNMU.
Worked on probation at the I. M. Sechenov 1st Moscow Medical Institute (1985), at the medical school of the Indiana University (Gary, USA, 1994–1995), atthe P. L. Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education (Kyiv, 2000, 2010).
PhD in Medical Sciences (1979), associate professor (1989), Doctor of Medicine (1989), Professor (1992). O. D. Lutsyk has guided three PhD theses, provided consulting for two Doctors of Medicine.
O. D. Lutsyk, as one of the first in Ukraine and the former Soviet Union, began using lectins as reagents for histochemical studies (1974). In 1989, the Department of Histology and Embryology of LNMU organized the first in the Soviet Union lectinhistochemistry laboratory, where during the following 25 years were trained many morphologists from Ukraine and Russia. Using purified lectins in the laboratory during this time, about 30 theses were defended there. Today it is the only laboratory in Ukraine, where the cleaning, characterization and testing in histochemistry of new and conventional lectins from the raw materials of the Carpathian region are being performed. The results of the scientist’s researches are summarized in the monographs “Lectins” (1980) and “Lectins in Histochemistry” (1989).
O. D. Lutsyk is the co-author of the first and still the only one in Ukraine textbook of histology, cytology and embryology for students of medical universities and academies. The book was published in 1992; got the State Award of Ukraine in Science and Technology (1994); since then this book ran into four re-editions (1993, 2003, 2010, 2013); it is translated into Russian (2013). O. D. Lutsyk has got Yaroslav Mudry Award of Sciences Academy of Higher School of Ukraine for the published in 1999 “Atlas of oral cavity microanatomy”. O. D. Lutsyk is also the co-author of the translation into Ukrainian of the “International histological terms” (editions of 1993, 2001, 2010), Dorland’s Illustrated Medical Dictionary (editions of 2003, 2007), “Langman’s Medical Embryology” after T.Sadler (2001), “Atlas of Human Anatomy” by F. Netter (2004, 2009), “Human Physiology” by W. Ganong (2002), “Atlas of Human Body” by T. Smith (2000, 2002) and others.
As Vice-Rector on the International Relations he has initiated the teaching of medicine and pharmacy for the foreign students of the Lviv Medical University in English (1998). This initiative subsequently received extensive development in other medical institutions of Ukraine. As Vice-Rector on the Scientific Work, hedevoted considerable attention to the involvement of the LNMU scientists into the international cooperation, publications of the results in the international refereed professional journals, training of highly qualified personnel – PhDs and Doctors of Medicine. As a member of the administration worked on the history of Lviv Medical University, including its Austrian period (1784–1918). The result of these searches were two editions of “Professors of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University” (2006, 2009), number of slogans in the “Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine” (2001–2013), “Lviv Encyclopedia” (2010, 2012), “Encyclopedia of Ivan Franko Lviv National University” (2011), “Austrian Biographical Encyclopedia” (2012, 2013), number of articles in scientific journals.
